Are you interested in peace and conflict resolution studies? If so, here’s an opportunity for you. The Rotary Foundation is now accepting applications for a Rotary Peace Fellowship for the 2023-24 academic year. The Foundation awards up to 130 fully funded fellowships each year to dedicated scholars from around the world to study at one of its peace centers.
Since the foundation’s inception in 2002, Rotary Peace Centers have trained more than 1,500 fellows who now work in more than 115 countries. Many of them work as leaders in governments, nongovernmental organizations, educational and research institutions, peace and law enforcement agencies, and international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Bank.
The Rotary Foundation offers fully funded academic fellowships to pursue a professional development certificate program or a master’s degree in peace and conflict resolution and prevention at one of the participating peace centers in Australia, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Uganda, Sweden, Thailand, and other countries.
Host Institutions for the Fellowship
There are several institutions that host the fully funded Rotary International Peace Fellowships, including the following:
International Christian University, Japan: master’s degree program in peace and conflict resolution studies.
Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA: Scholarships include the Master of International Development Policy Program (MIDP) or various degrees offered at the University of North Carolina.
University of Bradford, England: Advanced Practice in Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution MA.
Uppsala University, Sweden: Peace and Conflict Studies (MS.Sc.).
Makerere University, Uganda (certificate program).
Chulalongkorn University, Thailand (certificate program): Professional Development Certificate in Peace and Development Studies (PgCert).
University of Queensland, Australia: Master of Peace and Conflict Studies (MPACS).
Applicants should note that scholars may not study at a Rotary Peace Center in their home country, with the exception of candidates from Thailand who may attend the center at Chulalongkorn University and candidates from Uganda who may attend the center at Makerere University.
Eligible programs for the fully funded Rotary International Peace Fellowships.
Any Professional Development Certificate Programs or Master’s Degree Programs in areas related to peace and conflict resolution and prevention offered at the above institutions.
Number of scholarships available.
Up to 50 scholarships for master’s degree programs and 80 scholarships for certificate programs will be awarded.

These are fully funded scholarships that cover full tuition, housing, transportation, meals, and all internship and field study expenses.
Scholarship Award Requirements
Rotary Peace Fellowships are for professionals with work experience in international relations or peace and conflict prevention or resolution. In addition, applicants must have:
3 years of relevant professional experience for the master’s degree program
For the certificate program, have five years of relevant professional experience and be able to explain how their peacebuilding plan aligns with Rotary’s mission (Makerere University candidates must either be from Africa, have worked in Africa, or have worked with African communities or initiatives outside the continent).
Demonstrate leadership skills
Have a command of the English language
Have a bachelor’s degree
Have a strong commitment to intercultural understanding and peace in Africa or working with African communities or initiatives outside the continent.
The following individuals are not eligible for the scholarships:
Active Rotary members
Employees of a Rotary club or district, Rotary International, or any other Rotary entity
Former Rotary members and their dependents as described above (within 36 months of retirement)
Spouses, lineal descendants (children or grandchildren by blood or adoption), spouses of lineal descendants, or ancestors (parents or grandparents by blood) of living persons in these categories.
Guidelines for applying for a scholarship
In order for your application to be considered, you must adhere to the following guidelines:
Review the eligibility requirements listed above.
Find out about each Rotary Peace Center’s curriculum and programs. If you meet the admission criteria for the master’s degree and certificate programs, you will be asked to list two centers that you prefer from each.
Get involved with Rotary. Use the Club Finder to locate your nearest Rotary club. This way, you can learn more about Rotary’s work in your community and around the world. A club recommendation is optional, but strongly encouraged as part of your application.
A resume, academic and/or professional recommendations, essays, transcripts, social impact plan (certificate programs only), and test scores (master’s programs only) are required for application. All materials must be in English.
